ALEXANDRE DUMAS s-a nascut in 24 iulie 1802 la Villers-Cotterets. Tatal sau, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, general in armata lui Napoleon, cade in dizgratia acestuia si moare in 1806, lasandu-si familia intr-o situatie materiala precara. Creator de eroi legendari, dramaturg si romancier, Alexandre Dumas a cunoscut un succes timpuriu, contemporanii considerandu-l un geniu de forta lui Balzac si Hugo. Scrie drame istorice si moderne, tragedii, comedii, creand o opera dramatica deosebit de bogata. Ca romancier, s-a orientat spre romanul istoric, care devine sub pana sa roman de capa si spada. Semneaza aproape 300 de romane, printre care: Cei trei muschetari, Dupa douazeci de ani, Regina Margot, Colierul reginei...Moare la 5 decembrie 1870, la Puys, in apropiere de Dieppe.
